Capela de Santo António

The chapel of Santo António is, after the parish church, the richest monument of ethnographic and social significance. And although today it shows almost nothing of its original layout and the typical traditional atmosphere that surrounded it, it is located in the heart of the city, next to the monument to the Dead of the Great War (where a bandstand once stood) and surrounded by modern complexes that have been installed around it.

The old chapel, dating back to 1680, was demolished shortly after the city's emancipation in 1934. The architect João de Queirós was soon commissioned to build a more elegant and graceful chapel, with a pointed bell tower in the center and a large niche built into the gable of the façade, from which stands a large statue of the Patron Saint. This gave rise to the current chapel, which was inaugurated on October 13, 1935.
