The Municipal Library of S. João da Madeira is strategically located in the city center, playing a crucial role as a cultural and dynamic hub in the community.
Committed to the principles established by UNESCO for Public Libraries, the Municipal Library aspires to be a multifaceted space, encompassing culture, information, training and leisure. Its mission is to provide a cultural and socially inclusive environment, encouraging debate, reflection and active participation by all.
The library's cultural and scientific program seeks to stimulate interest in books and reading among a wide range of audiences. To achieve this goal, partnerships are established with local institutions to promote the use of the library and its resources by cultural, social and economic agents in the region. This collaboration can result in joint activities that contribute to the cultural development of the entire municipality.
In this context, the library takes an active role in combating illiteracy, organizing meetings with writers, colloquia, exhibitions and training activities. The use of various documentary media, from books to audiovisual and multimedia materials, is prioritized to enrich these initiatives.
