Founded in 1907, Viarco’s history began in Vila do Conde, when Councillor Figueiredo Faria and his partner, French engineer Jules Cacheux, decided to build a pencil manufacturing plant called Faria, Cacheux & Cª, also known as Portugália – Fábrica Portuguesa de Lápis.
A turning point came in 1931, when Manoel Vieira Araújo, an experienced hat maker from S. João da Madeira, decided to diversify the business of Vieira Araújo & Cª, Lda. and acquired the pencil factory. In 1936, the brand that would become emblematic for the country and accompany generations of Portuguese to this day – Viarco – was registered.
Five years later, in 1941, the company moved to S. João da Madeira, where it still operates today as Portugal’s only pencil factory.
When you visit Viarco’s facilities, you have the opportunity to explore the fascinating process of pencil making, from the selection of materials to final production. Visitors can witness the expert craftsmanship involved in creating these classic writing instruments.
