The old Paços do Concelho building in S. João da Madeira, one of the most emblematic in the municipality, has undergone renovation and adaptation work to become the Paços da Cultura.
Inaugurated on May 21, 2005, the Paços da Cultura building has several facilities. Thus, in the basement there is an auditorium with around 200 seats, on the ground floor there is a café-concert hall, a space dedicated to the Internet and an area reserved for outdoor events. The second floor is occupied by exhibition galleries, while the second floor houses the Memory Room. The City's Historical Archive, where the most important documents from the city's history are available to the public, is located in the basement.
This intervention, which fully preserved the original layout of the building, is the result of an investment of around one million two hundred and fifty thousand euros.
